Prompting vs. Building an Environment

Reviewed by Human · Updated September 22, 2026

Your agent broke a test and said "done." You already know the fix: a sharper prompt. More detail. A firmer tone. Tap to see why that barely moves the needle.

Real world

You don't make a plane fly safely by leaning into the cockpit and shouting louder instructions at the pilot mid-flight. You make it safe with instruments, checklists, and an air-traffic system that catches mistakes before they matter.

AI parallel

A prompt is you shouting at the pilot. A harness is the instrument panel and the checklists. The model is still doing the flying — but now it can see its altitude, and something stops it before it lands the plane in a field.

What Is Harness Engineering?

Everyone reaches for the prompt first. It feels like the steering wheel. But when a capable model fails on a real task, the prompt is rarely the variable that fixes it — and that's exactly what you saw when strong models still fail. **Harness**: the environment, files, and checks built around a model so its output is reliable, not just its instructions. **Harness engineering**: designing that whole environment instead of only refining the words you send the model. The course credits the walkinglabs harness-engineering repo for this framing. A better prompt tells the model what to do once. A harness governs *when, where, and how* it does it — every session, without you in the room.

If your first instinct on every failure is "reword the prompt," you're tuning the steering wheel while the road is missing.

Your turn

Take a real complaint you've had about a coding agent ("it forgot what we did," "it said done but nothing worked," "it changed files I never asked about"). Write it down, then answer: is this fixable by rewording your prompt, or does it need something that lives in the repo?

Reflect

Most "prompt problems" are actually missing-environment problems in disguise.

What's the clearest sign you're facing a harness problem, not a prompt problem?
