Your First Prompt Rewrite

Reviewed by Human · Updated July 13, 2026

A vague email prompt. A vague data prompt. A vague story prompt. Same disease, same cure — and you're about to prove the cure works in all three places.

Your turn

Domain 1: email. Rewrite this prompt using the five dimensions: 'Email the client about the delay.'

Reflect

If your rewrite named the client, the project, the new date, and the desired reaction, you closed every gap that mattered.

How Do You Rewrite a Vague Prompt?

**Prompt rewrite**: Restating an underspecified prompt with explicit audience, format, length, tone, and purpose. The method has three steps, and it never changes: 1. **Interrogate** — run the five dimension questions against the original prompt. Every one it can't answer is a gap. 2. **Decide** — answer those questions yourself. Don't delegate a single one to the model. 3. **Constrain** — add one hard boundary: a word count, a required structure, or a must-not. You met the five dimensions in the last module. Here they stop being a checklist and start becoming a reflex.

Interrogate. Decide. Constrain. Three verbs, any domain.

Does the same dimension matter most in every domain?

Your turn

Domain 2: analysis. Rewrite this prompt: 'Analyze this sales data.'

Reflect

An analysis prompt without a stated format is a coin flip on whether the output is even usable.

Your turn

Domain 3: creative. Rewrite this prompt: 'Write a story about a robot.'

Reflect

Compare your three rewrites. Different domains, different details — but you asked the same five questions every time.

The method travels; the lever shifts

One method now covers your email, your analysis, and your story: interrogate, decide, constrain. For routine tasks, specificity plus context is everything the model needs. When it isn't enough, examples pick up the slack — the show-don't-tell principle behind few-shot prompting, which is where this curriculum heads next.

A teammate writes: 'Write a 200-word LinkedIn post about our product launch, upbeat tone.' Which dimension is still missing?
