The Instruction Audit

Reviewed by Human · Updated July 13, 2026

People who prompt for a living share one habit that takes about 30 seconds and prevents most bad outputs before they happen. It's not a magic phrase.

How Do You Audit a Prompt Before Sending?

Run four questions over your prompt, in order. **Instruction audit**: A quick pre-send review that checks a prompt for action, scope, constraints, and output form. 1. **Action** — is there exactly one clear verb? ('Handle', 'fix', and 'help with' are hiding places, not verbs.) 2. **Scope** — does the prompt say exactly what material to work on, and for whom? 3. **Constraints** — are the limits written down? Length, tone, what to include, what to avoid. 4. **Output form** — could a stranger sketch the shape of the answer? Bullets, a table, one paragraph, a tweet? Any question you can't answer from the prompt alone, the model can't answer either. The audit catches missing pieces — and as your prompts grow, you'll also feed the model background it needs, because context is everything.

If you can't point to an element in your prompt, it isn't there. Head-canon doesn't count.

Your turn

Audit these three prompts with the 4-element checklist. For each: name what's missing, then write the one line you'd add. 1. "Translate this." 2. "Write a friendly 100-word welcome email for new gym members and mention the free first class." 3. "Give me ideas for my presentation."

Reflect

Which element went missing most often across the three? That's your personal blind spot — audit for it first from now on.

The audit is really empathy

Auditing a prompt means reading it as a stranger would — because that's exactly what the model is. It has no memory of your project, your boss, or the three drafts you already hated. It has the words on screen. The audit isn't bureaucracy; it's the discipline of putting your whole request where the model can actually see it.

You're about to send: 'List some tips for saving money, keep it short.' You run the audit. Which element is still missing?
