Building the Right Persona

Reviewed by Human · Updated July 14, 2026

A founder we'll call Maya asked AI to 'act as a marketing expert' and got a listicle she could've Googled. Then she added two sentences — a style and an audience — and got a plan she actually shipped. Personas aren't one ingredient. They're three.

How Do You Write a Good Persona Prompt?

**Persona layering**: building a role from three parts — expertise, communication style, and audience awareness. 1. **Expertise**: the specific field and sub-specialty. Not 'marketer' — 'retention marketer for subscription apps.' 2. **Communication style**: how the persona talks. Plain language? Blunt? Step-by-step? 3. **Audience awareness**: who the answer is for. An expert explains churn differently to a founder than to another expert. One more thing: a persona sits on top of a clear request, not instead of one. The anatomy of a prompt still applies — the role just sets the voice that delivers it.

Generic expert vs layered persona

✗ The empty expert

You are an expert. Give me marketing advice for my app.

'Expert' points at nothing specific, so the model averages across every kind of marketing advice it has ever seen. Averages read like Wikipedia.

✓ The layered persona

You are a retention marketer with 10 years in subscription apps. You explain ideas in plain language and always give one concrete next step. My audience is first-time founders. Suggest three ways to reduce churn in my meditation app's first week.

Expertise narrows the field. Style shapes the delivery. Audience sets the depth. The model now draws from one clear region instead of a fog.

Your prompt

Your turn

Build your own three-layer persona for a real task you have this week. Fill in the template, then run it in any AI chat.

Reflect

Which layer changed the output most when you ran it? That's the layer your tasks are most sensitive to.

🎨

Style is half the persona

Expertise changes what the model says. Style changes how it says it — and 'how' is usually what decides whether you can use the answer. If you only ever tweak one layer, tweak style.
