Beyond 'Act as an Expert'

Reviewed by Human · Updated July 22, 2026

"Act as a senior developer" might be the most copy-pasted prompt trick on the internet. Here's the uncomfortable part: on its own, it barely moves the needle.

Today's models already write like a competent generalist by default. Telling one to "be an expert" mostly relabels that default. What changes output is what comes *after* the role — and most people never write that part.

Live Demo — AI Terminal

Try this in two rounds. Round one: send the model "Act as an expert developer. Review this function name: getData()" and note what you get. Round two: send the layered version below and compare.

Your prompt

So why does plain "act as an expert" fall so flat?

Do Role Prompts Actually Work?

**Role prompting**: assigning the AI an identity or perspective to shape its response. Yes, they work — but not the way most people use them. A bare role ("act as a lawyer") changes surface vocabulary and little else. A layered persona changes *decisions*: what to include, what to skip, what to assume the reader already knows. A role is really just concentrated context, and as you saw in Context Is Everything, context does the heavy lifting in a prompt. This course teaches the layering method behind that demo above: **Persona stack**: a role built from three explicit layers — expertise, communication style, and audience. Module 2 takes the stack apart. For now, hold one idea: the role is the *start* of a persona, not the persona.

A persona earns its place when it removes decisions from the model — not when it adds decoration.

Your turn

Upgrade this bare role prompt by adding exactly two lines: one that pins down the communication style, one that names the audience. Starting prompt: "Act as a marketing expert. Write a product description for a smart water bottle."

Reflect

Which of your two added lines changed the output more? Most people expect style to win — and are surprised when audience does.
