The Refinement Loop

Real world
A barista pulls a test shot of espresso before serving. Too sour? Grind finer. Too bitter? Coarser. They don't throw out the machine and buy a new one — they taste, diagnose, adjust.
AI parallel
Your first output is the test shot. You don't delete the chat and start over. You taste it, name what's off, and adjust one dial with a follow-up.

Watch a two-step refinement. First prompt, honest evaluation, targeted follow-up. Note how small the follow-up is.
Your prompt
How Do You Refine an AI Prompt?
**Refinement loop**: A 3-step cycle — evaluate the output, identify the gap, send a targeted follow-up. Step 1 — Evaluate. Read the output like an editor, not a fan. Is it actually what you wanted? Step 2 — Identify the gap. Name the difference between what you got and what you wanted. Be specific. 'It's bad' isn't a gap. 'It's too formal' is. Step 3 — Targeted follow-up. Ask for that one change. Keep what already works. **Follow-up prompt**: A short message that corrects one specific gap while keeping everything else. Often the gap is missing background the model never had. Remember: context is everything to a model — it can't use what you didn't give it. When the gap is missing information, the follow-up is where you add it.
Field note
Early on, I spent almost an hour on a single prompt for a client's onboarding email. I kept editing it before sending — adding rules, examples, warnings — convinced I could pre-solve every problem. The output was still off. Deadline pressure forced me to just send a rough prompt and react: 'shorter', then 'warmer, less corporate', then 'end with one clear action'. Three follow-ups, maybe four minutes total, and it was done. The hour of pre-polishing had been me trying to guess what the model would do. The four minutes were me responding to what it actually did. I've never written a 'perfect' prompt since — I write a decent one and steer.
Your turn
Run the loop on this output. You asked for 'tips to sleep better' and got: 'Sleep is very important for health. Try to sleep 8 hours. Avoid screens. Exercise is also good. Caffeine can be bad.' Evaluate it, name the gap, write the follow-up.
Reflect
If your follow-up mentioned more than two changes, trim it. Small follow-ups are easier for the model to nail.
The loop compounds
Each pass keeps everything the last pass got right. Round 1 fixes content. Round 2 fixes tone. By round 3 you have output no single prompt would've produced — because you couldn't have specified all of it blind.
