Adding Context: Who, What, Why
Reviewed by Human · Updated July 14, 2026
Real world
Walk up to a stranger and ask, "What should I wear?" You'll get a shrug or a random guess. Ask a tailor while saying, "Outdoor wedding, June, I'm the best man, I run hot" — now you get a real answer. The tailor didn't get smarter. You got specific.
AI parallel
The AI is the tailor with no eyes. It can't see the wedding, the weather, or you. Context is how you hand it what it can't observe: who's involved, what's happening, and why you're asking.
Of the three context dimensions — who, what, why — one usually changes the output more than the other two combined. Guess before you tap.
What Context Should You Add to a Prompt?
Three dimensions cover most of what a prompt is missing. They map to the anatomy of a prompt you've already seen — context is one organ, and it has three parts: **Audience**: Who the response is for — their role, knowledge level, and relationship to you. **Subject**: What the situation actually is — the facts the model can't observe on its own. **Goal**: Why you're asking — what the answer needs to accomplish once you have it. You don't need labeled sections. A sentence per dimension, woven in naturally, does the job. Audience context is also a close cousin of personas, where you assign the AI a role — that's a whole course of its own.
Bare request vs. who-what-why
✗ The context-free ask
Which deadline? To whom? Is this good news or damage control? The model has to invent all of it, so you'll get a stiff, generic email you'd never send.
✓ Who, what, why — plus one constraint
Now the model knows the readers, the actual news, and the emotional job of the email. The length cap keeps it from padding.
Your turn
Upgrade this bare prompt by adding one sentence for each dimension: "Give me ideas for a birthday gift."
Reflect
Reread your three lines. Could a thoughtful friend now give you a genuinely good suggestion? If yes, so can the model.
