HR Prompting Principles

✗ Wrong way
Write a job ad for a young, energetic go-getter to join our team.
That ad looks completely normal — which is the problem. 'Young' and 'energetic go-getter' are age-coded, and an AI will happily amplify the framing, producing copy that screens out qualified older candidates before a human ever reads a résumé. That's a textbook **adverse impact** risk. **Adverse impact**: when a neutral-seeming practice disproportionately screens out a protected group.
✓ Better way
Write a job ad describing the responsibilities and required skills for this role in neutral language, with no references to age, energy level, or culture-fit stereotypes.
Stripping the age-coded adjectives and anchoring on responsibilities keeps the ad job-related and widens the qualified pool instead of quietly narrowing it.
There's one HR task where reaching for AI is almost always a mistake — even though vendors sell it there hardest.
How Do You Avoid Bias In AI Job Descriptions?
Bias rarely enters through obvious slurs. It sneaks in through **coded language**: everyday words that correlate with a protected group even when nobody intends them to. **Coded language**: wording that signals age, gender, or background without naming it directly — 'rockstar,' 'aggressive,' 'recent grad,' 'strong English.' With HR prompts, context is everything: tell the AI who the role is really for and what to avoid, or it will default to the most common — and most stereotyped — phrasing in its training data. Pair that with clear instructions about neutral language, and you convert a bias risk into a fairness tool.
Your turn
Below is a real-sounding prompt. Find every biased or coded element, then rewrite the prompt so AI produces a fair job description.

Which coded word would you personally have let slide before this module?
Fairness is a prompt design choice
You don't get an unbiased job description by hoping. You get it by naming the constraint out loud in the prompt — the same way you'd brief a junior recruiter before they touch a live req.
